Business Case for Health & Safety

You invest in your workers with training, by developing their skills - grooming them to succeed in their jobs so they can contribute to your business. Many have been with you for a long time with that relationship being built on loyalty & trust.

Valuing your people adds value to your company. The best companies, large and small, build a brand reputation that is synonymous not only with superior service or an excellent product, but also an outstanding management philosophy where safety and health is a core value.

The value for businesses makes sense: focusing on safety and health programs is the right thing to do; it saves money and adds value to the organization.

Direct cost savings to business when workers stay whole and healthy (there are many more!):

  • lower WSIB costs,
  • decreased layout for return-to-work programs,
  • less faulty products,
  • lower costs for job accommodations for injured workers,
  • reduced MOL fines

Focuing on your safety and health program can significantly reduce indirect costs, too:

  • lost productivity,
  • costs of recruitment and/or training for replacement workers,
  • incident investigation costs,
  • injured worker follow-up procedures, paperwork and reporting,
  • overtime expenses

In respect to the value to workers, the relationship is even clearer.

Getting hurt or sick is not just physically painful. On-the job injuries and illnesses can significantly reduce income, increase stress and hinder a full family life.

And on the value added side, fewer injuries and illnesses also lead to:

  • higher morale,
  • better labor/management relations,
  • reduced turnover,
  • and better use of human capital.

In addition, business benefits from an enhanced corporate reputation as a caring employer.

You may be surprised at how much injuries and illnesses are actually costing
your organization. CLICK HERE to use WSIB's injury cost calculator to find out.

Program Eligibility

There are no prerequisites to joining as a GENERAL MEMBER.

To participate as a Bay of Quinte Safety Network REBATE MEMBER, your firm must:

  • Have commitment from the owner or senior management to participate in the program
  • Create and enhance a safety culture in the workplace
  • Be a Schedule 1 firm
  • Be in good standing with the WSIB
  • Be committed to participating for a least one full calendar year
  • Not be a member of any other WSIB Safety Group Program
  • Not be a current member of the Safe Communities Incentive Program (SCIP).

REBATE MEMBER

At the beginning of the year, you will be required to select five safety elements from the Safety Groups’ Achievement List provided by the WSIB that will initiate or improve upon your inhouse Health & Safety Program. You will learn how to implement these initiatives through attending meetings, sharing ideas and pooling resources with other firms in your safety group. At the end of the year, the group can receive a rebate, based on the entire group's success in implementing their selected safety elements. When participating in subsequent years, a firm is required to maintain their elements from the previous year and pick five new elements.

Participation Requirements

To maintain your status in the Safety Groups Rebate program and to be eligible for the financial rebate, you must complete the following requirements:

  • Participate in at least three Bay of Quinte Safe Communities, Safety Network meetings throughout the year
  • Complete baseline and year-end assessments of your firm's health and safety program strengths and weaknesses
  • Develop and implement an action plan of health and safety elements
  • Keep Bay of Quinte Safe Communities informed of your progress
  • Submit a year-end achievement report documenting your accomplishments for the year.
  • Not have any fatalities in the program year.

General Member

General Membership gives you alll the same benefits, ie. Bay of Quinte Safe Communities membership, Safety Group meetings, support, networking, on-line resources, discounted registration fees for workshops/events, etc.. EXCEPT you would NOT be eligible for the WSIB rebate.

General Membership would be a good compromise if you value the program but don’t want to complete all the WSIB mandatory components and paperwork.

Testimonials

"As (a general member), myself or another colleague sat in on (Bay of Quinte Safe Communities' Safety Network) meetings throughout the year. Our company enjoyed the course and rebate a few years ago so this was a good opportunity to keep in touch with the group without completing all the forms. Participating in the activities reminded me of improvements we can make in our workplace and hearing ideas from others gave me some tools to use. We are required to stay abreast of safety initiatives not only for our own staff but also to serve our clients."

“Sigma at the end of September (2008) will have gone 2.4 years without a lost time incident…. You always have to be on your toes and be wary of anything new, but thanks to (the Safety Group Coordinator) and Safety groups we have come a long way in our safety record.”

Kevin McCaughen,
Plant Manager, Sigma Stretch Film of Canada

“I was a little nerve racking when I heard the Ministry of Labor was here but, with the programs we have put into place it made the visit much more bearable. . . I was able to answer his questions quickly and was able to show him everything he was asking for. . . Being a part of the Safety Group has pushed us to put our policies into place and to maintain them.     . . The visit went well.”
