Safe Holidays
candles
  • Don't leave candles unattended
  • Never put candles on your tree
  • Keep candles away from other decorations
  • Place candles in tip-proof, non-flamable containers
  • Never leave children or pets alone in a room with lit candles
  • There are NO legal or testing standards for candles so choose them carefully
Crime
  • Lock your vehicles and keep valuables hidden
  • When disposing of gift packaging, turn boxes inside out and only put a few to the curb per week
  • Put lights on timers if you are planning to be away
  • Take care when sharing holiday plans and gifts received over social media sites
Travel
  • Winter tires can make a significant difference between maintaining control over your vehicle and skidding
  • Check road conditions before you head out on a long trip
  • Keep a winter safety kit in your trunk
  • Keep your car well maintained and full of gas
Lights
  • Check your indoor and outdoor lights for fraying or damaged cords
  • Don't overload your recepticles
  • Plug your lights into a power-bar with a circuit breaker
  • Turn lights off at night or when you are away

Tree

  • When picking a tree, look for one with glossy, soft needles that spring back when bent
  • Trim the base of the tree about 1/4" before setting it up. This will help it absorb water and stay fresher longer
  • Keep your tree away from heat sources
  • Water your tree often - An average tree looses 1 litre of water per day for each inch diameter
  • When lots of needles start dropping off, it's time to take down the tree and put it outside
